CHAPTER 14

Needless to say, Betty was none too pleased when I deposited Nick back at her house. I pulled her aside privately and told her about Alma.

“Someone ratted on us. They told Alma about seeing Nick fall from his wizard box.”

She sucked air. “Oh no! This is worse than I thought. What did she say?”

“She threatened to call in the mystics. If she sees him and thinks he’s really Santa Claus, she’s going to blow the whistle. The mystics will come.”

“And all will be lost.”

I glanced over and looked at Nick. His rosy cheeks and button eyes were warm, welcoming. He filled out his clothes perfectly. This wasn’t the attire of a shabby tramp. No, great care and detail went into the stitching of his overalls, his shirt. His boots even gleamed.

Maybe Santa was real…

No. I couldn’t let myself go there. That wasn’t Santa. Santa didn’t exist. No way. No how.

It was an absolute impossibility. The sooner the folks of Magnolia Cove figured that out, the better.

“Anyway,” I told Betty, shoving aside those unwelcome thoughts, “you’ve got to do a better job of keeping an eye on him. I was able to keep Alma away this time. But I can’t promise that I’ll be so good at it the next.”

She nodded and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Kid, you did good. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” I said kindly. “Now. What’ve you and Axel been cooking up all day? Anything you’d care to share with me?”

She clapped her hands. “We have several potions ready to try on him. Want to watch?”

And see this nightmare be over? Absolutely. “Does he drink them by the spoonful or the vial full?”

She winked. “Grab a spoon and we’ll see what happens.”

I did as she asked, and we headed over to Nick. Axel had just come out of the bathroom when Betty had the potions lined up.

I nuzzled up to him. “Looks like you’ve been busy all day.”

He wrapped an arm around my shoulders. “We’ve had a time of it. Hopefully one of these potions will work.”

“I’m sure it will,” I said with encouragement. He nodded, but I could tell that Axel wasn’t convinced. I rubbed his arm. “You’re a brilliant wizard who always knows the right potion to get us through tough times.”

“I don’t know,” he said doubtfully. “Santa has a lot of magic. Some of that protects him.”

“What do you mean?”

“Even though he’s lost his memory, the cloak of power that shrouds him, keeping him unharmed from someone who wanted to hurt him, that same magic could keep our spells from breaking through and erasing his amnesia.”

“Okay,” I said, trying to keep the sting of disbelief from my voice.

Axel frowned. Guess I hadn’t done such a great job. “Just watch,” he growled.

Then he moved away from me to help Betty. What had I done? All I’d said was okay. Granted, it had come out a little on the whatever you say side of sarcasm, but it wasn’t anything that we hadn’t already discussed.

“Now open your mouth and let me put this in,” Betty commanded.
